First Semester – Fall 2012
1. Connect International Study/Faculty Program, Sept 2012 w Denise Gardner, School of HRT
* Meet and Greet - Sept 18 from 4:00 to 6:00 room B303 @ Lakeshore
Social gathering and dinner to meet all internationals students taking part in the program
* International Cafe - Monday Oct 15 @ North in Staff Lounge 3:30 to 4:30
I met 2 of my international buddies for coffee.
* Pot Luck Dinner and Movie Night - Liberal Arts Film Series “Connecting Canada”
November 8 from 6:00 to 9:30 @ North in Lecture Theatre
Shared an interesting assortment of dishes from various cultures and watched a movie. I participated in a very interesting discussion about ‘what it means to be Canadian’.
Reflection:
This gave me an opportunity to chat with international students in many different settings. In the School of Music we have many students who come from Korea. Often they do not have family here to support them. Spending time with my International “buddies” gave me a better understanding of how difficult it can be for them.
2. I was asked to design a Course Outline/Curriculum for one of the new Special Topics course entitled Vocal Techniques for Non-Vocal Majors (a half course beginning January 2013)
The official outline is included.
Reflection: This was a fun endeavor that inspired me to do some research in the area of Vocal Pedagogy.
Second Semester – Winter 2013
1. Creating a Voice/Guitar Duo unit in first year master class.
Ted Quinlan and I joined forces with our first year Master class for a UNIT on the Vocal and Guitar Jazz Duo. We played and demonstrated throughout the class and discussed the art of listening, being creative and being inspired by some of our favorite recordings.
Reflection: The students really enjoyed this unit on many levels. It reminded me how important it is for them to see and hear us play. It was also very integral that they were able to make a connection with the guitarists. They often feel segregated from instrumentalists and these kinds of interactions can give them confidence and enhance their learning.
2. I presented a clinic to R.E.A.L Music for Secondary PD Session on Feb 15, 2013 @ North Toronto CI. This also involved my Humber Vocal Jazz Ensemble.
Reflection:
This was a clinic specifically for teachers. The students were involved not only in the singing of various techniques and exercises for demonstration purposes but participated in the discussions and answered some questions from the teachers that were directed to them. I also think that hearing me discuss my philosophy of vocal jazz techniques gave them a insight into my process and possibly a better appreciation for what a director does.
